CHENNAI: A 20-year-old murder accused committed suicide by hanging inside his cell at the Central Prison at Puzhal on Monday night.Police said M Saravanan, who was accused in a murder case registered at Palur, Kancheepuram district and was in prison since April 19, 2011, was undergoing treatment as he was mentally depressed. On Monday, he had torn his bedsheet into two pieces and made a noose by tying it in the window grill of his cell, police said. Sources said prison officials noticed him hanging at around 10 pm and took him to Government Hospital at Royapettah where he died around 11.30 pm.Man trapped in landfill diesA constructional worker was killed in a reported land slide while digging a pit to build a sump in Thiruvanmiyur on Tuesday.Police said Anandan, the constructional worker, was among the trio engaged for digging up a deep pit for a sump. The digging began in the morning and Anandan went inside the pit to remove the dug up earth and stack up the same beside the pit. Suddenly, a wall of the pit collapsed bringing down tonnes of mud and earth on Anandan. The other two workers who were outside the pit attempted to rescue the trapped co-worker. However, their efforts were in vain as the worker was suffocated to death even before the rescue workers could reach him. His body was recovered from the site and sent to GRH for autopsy. When he entered the house he was shocked to find jewels missing from the safe. Except for the jewels, everything remained intact in the house. Police said the locks were intact.
