KOCHI: Practice sessions are in full swing at Maharaja’s College, St Teresa’s College and RLV College of Fine Arts, each bent on participating in the 51 events to bag the overall trophy at ‘Sargodayam-2012,’ the much-awaited M G University youth festival to be held in Tiruvalla from February 29 to March 4.Studies have taken a back seat with the majority of students and teachers putting in their might to win prizes. “All of us assembled in the hall, lit candles and took a pledge that we will bring the trophy home,” said Maharaja’s College Union secretary Afsal A K. The rolling trophy is in the name of former Arts Club secretary, the late Abhilash J Varghese, who took the college to victory in 1992,” he said. “We are the only government college in the state to win the fest for nine years,” Afsal added. Now we are fund hunting, we need at least `5 lakh from the public and `2 lakh from the college, he said.Even artistes from outside the state have been called to train students. “One of the trainers has helped us win prizes for skit and mime for the past 14 years,” said Afsal who refused to divulge his name. The competition levels being high, the college is keeping its plans and programmes close to its heart.“We are looking forward to the fest, the standard of performance is humongous and with that in our minds, we’re practising from 9 am to 4 pm,” said Susan, College Union chairman. The finance is through fund raisers and contributions from students and management.   St Teresa’s stood third in the drama fest held as part of ‘Sargodayam-2012’ in Angamaly on February 16, RLV stood first and St Xavier’s, second. For RLV which is into fine arts throughout the year, this is only a part of their routine. Only funds are a problem. “We are busy raising it in Tripunithura and we don’t need much as our strength is our students - be it music, set, instruments or make-up,” said Aswith, College Union secretary.St Teresa’s which has bagged the trophy nearly 14 times shared it with RLV last year. However, it is the Government Law College which is the most popular at the fest, springing surprises on the stage with unusual concepts and themes.
