Drought relief: K S Eshwarappa terms Central grant pittance

Calling the Centre’s grant of Rs 280 crore a pittance, Deputy Chief Minister K S Eshwarappa said that the state government had sought Rs 11,200 crore for drought-relief works, but the Centre’s response was ‘disgusting.

’ He told reporters here on Wednesday that Union Ministers Sharad Pawar and Jairam Ramesh had in Parliament asserted that Karnataka was the worst droughthit state. He recalled that four Central Study teams had visited the state and took stock of the situation.

The state government had sought assistance for drinking water, waiver of the farmers loans from nationalised banks and crop loss compensation, but the response was disgusting, he alleged.

“Four teams from the Congress, two JD(S) and three BJP teams have been touring the state and they can give suggestions on drought management,” he said.

The loss due to drought in state was Rs 3,680 crore, he informed. The Governor sent back the proposed Bill on regularisation of the sites used by poor families, he said and added that the proposed Bill clearly says that only small sites in revenue land used by BPL families would be regularised under the Akrama Sakrama scheme.

Id sent for the Governor’s nod, he pointed out.

We will again send it to him with a convincing note, he said. He said that the Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Department will have 20,000 engineering and 12,000 nonengineering staff soon. Each GP will have computer operators and 5,600 computer operators will soon be recruited on merit basis.

The state has 1,800 surveyors and 2,500 private surveyors and 1,500 surveyors would be recruited. Each private surveyor was paid `500 earlier, but now it has been decided to increase it to Rs 1,000.32.
