KOCHI: For the hundreds rushing to their work on Wednesday morning, covering the short stretch from Edapally to Kaloor was a test of patience with vehicles taking over an hour to inch by. Frustrated commuters alighted from the buses and started walking to their destinations as soon as possible. According to the Metro Rail officials, the Metro Rail-related work near the Ernakulam North Overbridge was affected by the traffic chaos in the city. The bottleneck was the result of the Kerala Students Union (KSU) state and district committee elections held at the North Town Hall. “The roads were already congested as a result of the Metro Rail-related work. The north bridge always witnesses heavy traffic,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) K S Baby Vinod. The traffic on NH-47 A stretch from Edappally to High Court Junction was at a standstill till 12 p.m. Adding to the woes was the scorching sun which made things worse for the elderly and students alike. Many students were heard ruing that they were late for the model tests held as a prelude to the upcoming SSLC exams. “The vehicles heading towards Kacheripady were diverted through the Kathrikadavu-Pullepady Road to ease the traffic jam. Though the police were aware of the election, we didnt expect such a severe traffic jam. However, the situation was taken into control immediately,” he added.
