CHENNAI: In what is believed to be a case of murder for gain, a 70-year-old woman was found stabbed to death in an orchard in Kodungaiyur on Saturday.The victim, I Pappathi Ammal, was working as the caretaker of a large orchard located on Kadumbadi Amman Koil Street at Chinnandi Mattam. A native of Thoothukudi district, her husband Irullappa Devar had passed away 10 years ago. The elderly woman lived alone in a small house constructed for her inside the garden, while her married sons lived in Koyambedu. On Sunday morning, the security guard of the nearby marriage hall Gurumurthy noticed Pappathi’s body lying on the ground with injuries on her head. Her gold earrings and chain were missing. He informed her son Pandi, who called the police. Senior police officials visited the scene of crime, recovered the body and sent it for a post-mortem. A special police team has been set up to nab the murderers.4 Held for Sale of GanjaThe suburban police arrested four people, including two members of a family, for selling ganja in Thiruninravur on Sunday. Three others, including a couple, escaped during the raid but the police seized over 1kg of ganja. Acting on a tip off, a police team led by additional deputy commissioner S Jeyakumar, inspector Riyazuddin and sub-inspector Subramani raided a house at Kannigapuram, Thiruninravur and arrested Nalini (20), her sister-in-law Rosie (26) and two workers Kanchana (27) and Raja (56) -- all from Sudesipuram, Thiruninravur -- for selling ganja. Nalini’s parents Nathan and Gowri and one Amulu escaped when police arrived to conduct the raid. Police said the family had purchased ganja from Rajamundry, Andhra Pradesh at cheaper rates and were selling them at a higher rate. “They purchased a kilo for Rs 10,000 and had made packets in different quantities priced between Rs 20 and Rs 100. They had transported the ganja through trains,” said a police officer. Police are conducting further investigations.
