There are still many things that need to be worked on to achieve the goal of total sanitation in Kottayam town, says Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan.

   He was speaking after launching the second phase of the Janamaithri Waste-free Town programme at BCM College auditorium on Monday.

However, he praised the awareness campaigns conducted as part of Waste-free Town programme, terming it as a considerable success.

    “The efforts that have been made so far are not sufficient. We still need a long way to go to attain our goal. We need to create awareness among the public that the absence of a proper waste disposal system would create intolerable inconvenience for all residents. We will adopt every possible measures to ensure total sanitation in the town by January 2013.”

The minister distributed awards to selected individuals including people-friendly police beat officers, institutions and organisations for the efforts in waste management by installing units for waste disposal.

The recipients selected for the honour were Pradeep Kumar, senior civil police officer of Kottayam (West) police; K.S. Shajimon, civil police officer of Kottayam (East) police, Cheleela, woman civil police officer of Kottayam (East) police; Praveen Itticheriya, B C M College, St Joseph Girls High School, M.M. Publications, Seematti Silks, Rubber Board Residents Association, and Thirunakkarakunnu Residents Association.

Crime Branch Inspector-General and State nodal officer of the Janamaithri Suraksha Proejct B Sandhya delivered keynote address. Kottayam Municipal chairman Sunny Kalloor presided over the function.
