ANANTAPUR: The additional senior civil judge has directed former district collector Somesh Kumar to pay a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to Jamia Masjid Muthavalli KM Shafiulla for defaming him.The sensational verdict was given on November 8, but its details were disclosed by Shafiulla at a press conference here on Wednesday. Shafiulla alleged that the then collector Somesh Kumar at the behest of some Muslim leaders, who were jealous of him, initiated an inquiry against him in 2002-03 with a sole aim of tarnishing his image. The collector had ignored the rule that for any inquiry against a Muthavalli, prior permission from Wakf board or the government is mandatory, he added. He said he had obtained a stay order from the High Court when the collector tried to take away the records and also filed a defamation case in the local court against him claiming Rs10 lakh as compensation for defamation and also causing mental agony.“An official Mahamma Shafi Ujjama, who was appointed by the State Wakf Board to probe into the allegations, declared me as not guilty and also made it clear that Somesh Kumar acted beyond his power and also misused his position and pressed the Waqf board to take action against me,' he added.
