Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone has sounded warning bells for European races that face an axe "in favour of emerging markets" over the next couple of years.
"It is possible that Europe will lose a couple of races in favour of emerging markets," Ecclestone said during an interview with the Italian magazine Panorama. Sochi, New Jersey and a Grand Prix in Thailand are the three new circuits that could join the F1 roster.
Ecclestone particular named Monza as one of the circuits under threat. "If we do lose Monza, and I say if, because no decision has yet been taken, it would only be for economic reasons. Of course, the quality of the circuit and the organisation could be better, but - I repeat - is not the crucial point," he said.
Currently Barcelona, Monte Carlo, Silverstone, the Nurburgring, the Hungaroring, Spa-Francorchamps and Monza are the seven European circuits on the F1 calendar.
