BHUBANESWAR: The State Government on Thursday demanded an assistance of ` 106 crore from the Centre towards agriculture input subsidy to mitigate the sufferings of the farmers hit by the recent floods. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik met Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar in New Delhi and expressed concern over the huge crop loss due to the recent floods. The crop damage has severely impacted the small and marginal farmers who need Government assistance to go for rabi crops. Contending that Orissa did not receive even the allocated quantity of chemical fertilisers for the kharif season 2011, he sought the Centre’s support for ensuring adequate and timely supply of fertilisers for the rabi season. Pawar assured Patnaik full support from his Ministry. He told the Chief Minister that a high-level committee will meet soon to consider the demands of the State. According to an official statement, Pawar promised that adequate support would be provided in terms of agriculture input subsidy and efforts will be made to ensure adequate and timely supply of chemical fertilisers.
