VELLORE: Eight-year-old Manimegalai has become a victim of dispute between her parents. Suspecting the fidelity of his wife, a 35-year-old mason poisoned their only child and also consumed a soft drink laced with poison on Tuesday. While the girl died, her father is receiving treatment at the Government Hospital at Tirupattur.Kandhili police said Sivakanthan, a native of Jalliyur near Kandhili, took his daughter, a student of class II in a private school in Tirupattur, to their native village after the school hours on Tuesday. Sivakanthan, who was distressed after his wife Lakshmi left him a week ago following a dispute, gave poison-laced soft drinks to Manimegalai and also consumed it at around 6.15 pm.The neighbours found the girl and father unconscious and rushed them to the government hospital. The girl died in the hospital around 10.30 pm. Sivakanthan survived and his condition is stable, police said.Inspector Gajendran, the investigating officer of the case, said that Sivakanthan was living with his daughter and wife in a rented house in Tirupattur for the last few years. A week ago, his wife went missing following a quarrel between them.Sivakanthan took the extreme step suspecting that Lakshmi had eloped with someone. “Sivakanthan and Lakshmi were married for nine years. He was addicted to alcohol and he often quarrelled with his wife and had also beaten her. Unable to withstand the harassment, she left for Erode and worked there in a private company,” Gajendran said.On hearing the news of the death of her only child, Lakshmi returned to Tirupattur. Lakshmi had given birth to two children after Manimegalai, but both died, police said. The police registered a case against Sivakanthan under section 302 (murder) followed by 309 (attempt to commit suicide) of IPC and are investigating.
