Flower vendors at the Koyambedu Market too are up in arms against the Centre’s decision to allow FDI in the retail sector and the recent diesel price hike. These would spell doom for native agri-business dealers, say the merchants.
“Competition rarely leads us to benefit. In their bid to attract more sales, vendors often cut on quality, which is rarely beneficial,” Koyambedu Malar Mottu Vyabarigal Sangam secretary Mookandi told City Express.
He added that the storage time for flowers is very minimal as compared to vegetables and fruits. “Flowers have a very small shelf life. Our produce which is fresh in the morning, fades by afternoon. Thus, we have a small window to conduct our business,” he said.
Mookandi said that they are supporting the bandh despite the adverse implications to them, despite it being a day after Ganesh Chaturthi and the upcoming muhurthams — auspicious days for marriages and other events.
