Form panel to identify BPL beneficiaries: Nitish
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said the Commission should work independently like the Election Commission.

New Delhi: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has suggested the formation of a separate and independent commission to identify Below Poverty Line (BPL) beneficiaries under the proposed food security law.

He said the Commission should work independently like the Election Commission, which would help both the state and Central Governments in identifying the real BPL beneficiaries.

"I suggest the formation of an independent commission which should regularly identify the BPL or priority and general category beneficiaries under the food security law on set parameters," he told reporters in New Delhi.

The Bihar Chief Minister said "this independent Standing Committee comprising specialists should add any real BPL beneficiary, if left out, and exclude such beneficiaries who have been wrongly included to receive benefits under the BPL category."

"I have already given this suggestion to the Centre and it has welcomed and liked it," he said.

This, he said, would also help the BPL beneficiaries ensure that the right people get the benefits of various schemes aimed at helping them.

Kumar was in New Delhi to meet Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh and thanked him for clearing the way for various pending road projects in Bihar.
