KOCHI: Maveli will finally descend on the tourism zone of Fort Kochi where the residents are making preparations to celebrate the Onam in a big way from September 8, Antony Kureethara, local councillor said.‘Onolsavam Fort Kochi’ will be organised at K J Manuel Nagar, Santa Cruz Ground, Fort Kochi. The event will be held for four days and conclude on September 11.This is the first time that such an event has been planned and it brings out the unity among the residents.“Fort Kochi, popular for the Cochin Carnival, is planning to make the Onam celebrations an yearly affair to inculcate the values of tradition and role of festivals among the younger generation,” said Joy, an office-bearer of the reception committee.Ten residents associations are gearing up to make the programme a big hit with the participation of one and all in the area.Various social organisations and clubs in the area will also put in their mite, Antony Kureethara, the chairman of the committee, said.The aim of the committee is to make the festival more colourful and involve more people in it. It would also help in promoting tourismat a time when tourists start trickling in to the state after a lean period to watch the boat race and other events of the harvest festival, Joy said. It offers an opportunity for tourists to know more about them, he said.The tourists would be given the privilege to take part in the programmes. The programme which includes laying of flower carpet, various dance items, tug of war, among others ,will be held in the morning, he said.Artists from Thrissur will display their skill in ‘pulikali’. Mega shows will be conducted at night. Efforts are on to make the programme a big hit.
