BANGALORE: Abraham Lincoln’s definition of democracy was ‘of the people, by the people and for the people’. A team of three journalism students from the Bangalore campus of Manipal University has given this a new turn. A news website they have started is ‘of the students, by the students and for the students’.Launched officially here on Monday, The Students’ Post (TSP) is an initiative of first-year journalism students Tajinder Pal Singh Walia, Shravan Regret Iyer and Pranav Kohli from the Department of Journalism at Manipal University. TSP seeks to provide a platform for budding journalists and writers to have their works published. “We know that many students feel dejected after their articles are rejected by newspapers. Our website will give them the opportunity to showcase their journalistic skills,” says Shravan, who started working on this website with Tajinder and Pranav in February this year. This clean looking website covers a wide range of topics. The News Desk feature includes news reports concerning city, national and international topics. The Creative Corner features consists of links that help students enhance their skills in photography, writing and reporting, with links to various short films that kindle the flame of thoughts.“TSP is not just about writing. It is about reading and learning. What we want to do is to raise important issues and initiate debates on them,” said Pranav. He is the author of a piece on nuclear energy titled Unclear About Nuclear, which talks about the ongoing controversy of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant. All the posts on TSP are contributed by students, making TSP an exclusive students’ initiative. Tajinder says that there are big ideas in store for the website. “Soon, we will have contests for photography. We have also planned shoutcasts and podcasts. Based on the response to the website, we plan to come out with an e-paper every month. Further, a real magazine will be brought out along with a TSP channel on YouTube,” he says, elaborating on his plans for the site. “TSP has been started with a vision to encourage student journalism. I am sure this will take journalism to the next level,” said Dr Thammaiah Chekkara, Director, Manipal University Bangalore Campus. Interested student journalists can contribute to TSP by visiting www.thestudentspost.com.
