MADURAI: Tension was palpable right from the morning at the District Police Office here as rumours were rife about the arrest of key DMK functionaries in land grabbing case. The arrest of G Thalapathy, Pottu Suresh, Kodi Chandrasekaran, union chairman of Tirumangalam union and Krishnapandi, took place late in the evening, amidst vociferous protest by DMK cadre.They were arrested after being interrogated by a police team headed by ADSP A Mayil Vahanan and then lodged at the Madurai Central Prison.It may be recalled that Sivanandi and his wife Pappa of Tirumangalam had filed a complaint with the District Crime Branch (DCB), land grabbing cell on July 14 that urban district secretary of Madurai G Thalapathy, executive committee member SR Gopi of the DMK party, ‘Pottu’ Suresh alias N Suresh Babu, Mookambigai Sethuraman, Tahsildar Manickam and few others had tortured the couple to give power of attorney of the 5.14 acre of land to Krishnasamy whose wife Indira Gandhi, is Tirunagar municipality chairman. Based on the complaint, S R Gopi and Thaai along with the four who were held were summoned to attend the inquiry.Thalapathy came to the SP office and had discussion with Kodi Chandrasekaran and his aides. When he and his aides expressed desire to leave stating that they were not called for interrogation even after two hours, the SP asked them to stay back. In the meantime, P Moorthy, urban district secretary of the DMK party, PM Mannan, deputy mayor of the Madurai corporation and others came in support of their party cadre.After ‘Pottu’ Suresh came to the DCB office, they were all taken for interrogation and later sent to Madurai central prison until the next hearing on August 2. SP Asra Garg said that seven cases including land grabbing, extortion were registered against them.
