For a 67-year-old, Potvin Page had a medical case history that was long and eventful. The Canadian who has had a host of medical issues realised that her healing process wasn’t optimal because of the carious drugs that she was taking — and her 111 kg body didn’t help her any. “Just moving around used to be a big pain, literally,” she announced at a programme recently. “Everything used to hurt terribly,” she added.
A specialist team of doctors headed by Dr V B Narayanamurthy, Senior Plastic Surgeon at Global Health City offered her a fresh lease of life when they recontoured her body by reducing the flab that had accumulated there over the years.
With excess skin and fat overhanging from the abdomen, back, large breasts and overhanging arms for several years, doctors had to conduct two pioneering body re-contouring surgeries; each lasted about five hours and were performed successfully to firm up the skin leaving minimal scars.
“We had to remove a large section of fat tissue from her back — this was almost five kgs by itself, before we attempted anything else. As she had undergone surgeries for various conditions relating to her heart and back, the medication she was taking was slowing us up,” he said. “Body re-contouring surgery can markedly improve the appearance as a whole. The effects of aging, gravity, fluctuations in weight, and loss of skin elasticity — all combined lead to a loss of tone in various parts of the body as we age,” he added.
Page contacted Global Health City six months ago for problems related to excess skin and fat. She underwent several unsuccessful operations in the past for various conditions. She also had medications which were potentially slowing the healing of these wounds. Post-operative care with pain management and loss of over eight kgs brought a new lease of life and she will be discharged very soon. “I feel like I’m much younger and I have an opportunity to lead a normal life,” she added.
An upper arm lift (sometimes known as a ‘brachioplasty’) is part of a cosmetic surgery procedure called body contouring which is designed to remove skin and fat from the upper arms. After she came to India seeking solutions for her health problems, she ended up extending her stay in India with a “more than welcome – truly Indian holiday”.
Post the surgeries, as she was required to be around for periodical reviews by specialists, Page, choose to recuperate in India. With several holiday options available across the country, this seemed like a good option. She checked in at a well-known beach resort in the city so as to stay close to the hospital. The resort, which had large and lush tropical gardens overlooking the Bay of Bengal and great facilities, gave a perfect setting for a relaxed recuperation.
