There is strong evidence that the Higgs boson of the Standard Model, a subatomic particle at the centre of one of the biggest mysteries in physics, has been found bringing to fruition the efforts of several decades, Prof. Amitava Raychaudhuri, a renowned physicist, said here.
The observation of two completely independent experiments, ATLAS and CMS, at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Geneva, which did not know each other’s results and that too in the independent analyses in two Higgs decay modes, gives great confidence that a new resonance has been seen,” Raychaudhuri, Calcutta University Professor, said while delivering a lecture at the Siksha O Anusandhan University.
The next steps in particle physics will possibly be to look for signals of supersymmetry or extra dimensions
or other models which go beyond the Standard Model,” said Prof. Raychaudhuri, a visiting professor at CERN. The Bhatnagar Awardee, however, said: “There was
a serious lacuna in the Standard Model as gravity had been kept out of this discussion.”
Scientists at CERN had announced on July 4 discovery of ‘God Particle’, indicating the path for the future of the world. He said the resonance at CERN had all the properties expected of the Higgs boson. “Nevertheless, there are still further checks such as spin, couplings to other particles which need to be performed to definitively claim this is ‘The Higgs boson’ of the Standard Model”, the scientist added.
The lecture was organised by the Centre of Excellence for Mathematical and Theoretical Sciences of SOA University.
