Political parties are least bothered about the harassment meted out to the people by the frequent hartals. But an autorickshaw driver here has ventured to do his bit to alleviate their sufferings, although he has learnt to his dismay that even a Good Samaritan will not be spared by hartal supporters.
A K Haridasan, 62, plied his autorickshaw from Kozhikode city to Medical College Hospital free of cost on Thursday, but irate CPM demonstrators damaged the tyre of his vehicle in the afternoon.
“Hartal is not the apt way of protest. These protests affect those who come to the city for various purposes. Considering this, I decided to start free service to those arriving here for treatment in the medical college on hartal days,” said Haridasan who was present with his autorickshaw at the city railway station since 6 am.
He added three additional seats with small chairs for carrying nine persons at a time and had pillows and bedsheets for sick persons.
Before noon, Haridasan took two patients and their relatives to the Medical College Hospital.
Unfortunately, Haridasan’s service lasted only till noon as the hartal supporters, during a march, targeted his vehicle which was parked in front of the railway station.
