BANGALORE: In a sign of the government's change in stance on land acquisition for the proposed `36,000 crore Posco steel project in Halligudi village in Gadag district, Women and Child Welfare Minister C C Patil hinted that about 732 acres of land in Mevundi village in Gadag, which was earmarked for acquisition, could be denotified.
Addressing newsmen here on Wednesday, Patil, who is also Gadag District Minister, said that the government's intention in doing so was that the said land comes under the command area of the Singatalur Lift Irrigation project. He, however, asserted that the state government did not favour coercing farmers into parting with their land for the steel plant. "Contrary to media reports, over 375 farmers in Halligudi have come forward to give up their land for the project, albeit with some conditions," the minister averred. He said that farmers insisted on a compensation of `2025 lakh per acre; a job for one families who will be losing their land; and exemption from payment of stamp duty if they purchased alternate lands.

He assured that middlemen will not be involved in clinching land deals.
