The government would devise a senior citizens policy to ensure the protection of the elderly, Labour Minister Shibu Baby John said.
Inaugurating the Care, Aid and Relief for Elders (CARE) project by the Kerala Police in the district on Saturday, he said that the Social Welfare Minister would announce the policy soon. He said that the government had the duty to protect the elders at a time when a good number of elders were facing economic instability. Around 383 elderly persons have registered for the project already and it is expected that the figures would reach around 600. The senior citizens would be provided with an instruction booklet detailing them about the dos and don’ts to ensure safety and a directory of emergency numbers.
The beat police officer has to visit the registered senior citizens at least once a week and the Sub Inspector of a station has to visit them at least once a month.
The projects also aims at providing medical care by joining hands with NGOs. Police also have plans to celebrate the birthday and present a them with a gift with help of NGOs in the district. Mayor Prasanna Earnest would preside over the function. Former Minister C V Padmarajan, City Police Commissioner Debesh Kumar Behera, Nodal Officer of the project ACP J Jacob, ACP V Ajith, ACP Thomson Jose, Panmana ashram chief Pranavananada Theerdhapadar, Imam Suhail Ashari Pookkalathoor and Fr K J Yesudas spoke.
