Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh may soon be home to a specialised unit of the National Security Guards (NSG) if all goes according to plan. Sources told News18 that while the NSG will undergo restructuring, discussions are underway to establish a base of the Special Rangers Group, drawn from the CAPFs, in Ayodhya.

According to a top-level official, the government, to fulfill the force’s requirements, will hold discussions to establish a base for troops in Ayodhya, including anti-drone facility, which may also help secure the area in case of an attack. This unit will have specialised anti-drone component and will be combat-ready 24×7 to thwart any aerial attack.

The Ram Temple in Ayodhya which was inaugurated in January this year is among sensitive installations in India and is said to be on the radar of various terror outfits. The NSG had secured the Ram Mandir area during the high-profile Pran Pratishtha ceremony that took place on January 22.

The search for land to establish the base is currently underway and further plans will depend on the area zeroed-in on.

The government may also plan another center for a specialized unit in Kerala to meet the force’s requirements in the future.

The government has also decided to reduce the strength of NSG as part of the restructuring. The CRPF is likely to receive additional high-profile VVIPs from the NSG as the VIP security wing is already working on an expansion plan. The Parliament Duty Group (PDG), recently removed from Parliament, will join the VVIP wing of CRPF.

These troops are likely to be responsible for protecting nine VVIPs who currently have security cover from NSG. To meet the requirements, the wing needs more offices in different locations. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BSP chief Mayawati and six other VVIPs are under NSG cover.

Meeting on May 29

A high level meeting is scheduled for May 29, to be chaired by Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla. Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) Tapan Deka, Director-General of the Central Reserve Police Force Anish Dayal and the D-G of the National Security Guard (NSG) Nalin Prabhat will attend the meeting. Sources said the agenda would be to review the progress of the action plan outlined by Home Minister Amit Shah in February. The meeting is likely to discuss various issues linked to NSG and CRPF.
