Police said during the initial investigation, it was found that the family had filed a complaint under the SC/ST Act and for eve teasing, adding that it is being investigated if the murders are related to the case

A family of four, including a one-year-old infant and six-year-old girl, were shot dead at their home in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi on Thursday. The incident took place amid heavy police presence because of a fair in the area that attracted thousands.

According to police, unidentified men barged into the house of a government school teacher, and killed him, his wife and two daughters. The teacher was identified as Sunil (35), and his wife as Poonam (32).

Police said the victims lived in a rented accommodation on the Bhavani Nagar roundabout in the city. Nine shells and one live cartridge were recovered from the crime scene, they said.

Amethi superintendent of police (SP) Anoop Kumar Singh said Sunil was a native of Raebareli and was posted in a government school in Panhauna. During the initial investigation, it was found that the family had filed a complaint against one Chandan Verma under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, and for eve teasing, the officer said, adding that it is being investigated if the murders are related to the case.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognizance and expressed grief over the incident. He promised strict action against the culprits.

In a post on X in Hindi, he said: “The incident that happened in Amethi district today is highly condemnable and unforgivable. My condolences are with the bereaved families. In this hour of grief, UP government stands with the victim’s family. The culprits of this incident will not be spared at any cost, strict legal action will be taken against them.”

Opposition leader and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also put a video about the incident on social media, posting a cryptic: “Is anyone there?”
