New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to stay the Gujarat High Court order directing the state government to repair the religious places damaged during the 2002 riots.
The Gujarat government has told the Supreme Court that it would contemplate framing a scheme on the compensation issue. The state government had approached the Supreme Court asking for a stay on a High Court order to pay compensation.
The Supreme Court had earlier asked the Gujarat government for details of the shrines destroyed in the 2002 riots. The court had asked the government to quantify the amount needed to repair the religious sites damaged during the 2002 Gujarat riots.
Around 500 shrines were damaged in the 2002 Gujarat riots. The High Court had in fact pulled up the government for its inaction and negligence, which resulted in the destruction of religious structures.
The compensation claim had been filed by the Islamic Relief Committee of Gujarat. However, the Gujarat government insisted that the state should not be made to pay for any religious structure.
