Ahmedabad: The Gujarat government on Friday announced 10% reservation for the economically backward in general category which includes Patels.
The official notification for reservation will be issued by the state government on May 1. Sources said families with income below Rs 6 lakh per annum including Patels will be eligible for the quota.
The decision on quota taken by the state government came as a big win for Patel quota agitation leader Hardik Patel. Hardik spearheaded a movement across the state demanding quota for the Patel community.
He (Hardik) was arrested in a sedition case and is currently lodged at a jail in Surat.
Hardik claimed that he was wrongfully booked for sedition and for 'waging a war against the government' by the Ahmedabad police.
