New Delhi: While schools and parents are still trying to understand just what prompted Tuesday’s shooting at a Gurgaon school, they say the incident could have been prevented.
“Every parent will feel insecure now that the child is not safe even at school. It is a worrying trend,” says Reema Agnani, who has a 13-year-old daughter.
Reema’s daughter Palak is just a year younger than the boys who allegedly shot and killed their classmate on Tuesday.
When Reema heard about the shooting, her first reaction was shock, tinged with fear for her daughter. She says the school and parents could have done much more to prevent the tragedy.
“The parents and the school are responsible for the incident. They should have given more time to the child,” she says.
It's a view Suman Nath, Principal of Delhi's Tagore International School agrees with. Nath says the Gurgaon school and the parents missed out on signs of aberrant behaviour.
“The signs are always there. Academics starts to slip, they don't listen to teachers,” explains Nath.
The school authorities feel they can only do so much to deal with such deviant behaviour. The responsibility, in fact, lies with the parents who could have prevented such an incident.
But students blame neither school nor parents. They say the reasons for the murder could be more personal.
A freak incident, a trend or a reflection of urban upbringing? Tuesday's incident has left students, parents and schools with more questions than answers.
