NAGERCOIL: A ride through Alanji, a small fishing hamlet in Kanyakumari district, is fully geared up for a homecoming. Villagers have a reason to celebrate — one of the Indians on MV Suez, held captive by Somalian pirates, Infant Viju, was expected to return home by Friday midnight. The village erupted in joy when TV channels beamed visuals of him after his release. Infant Viju (24) of Alanji, near Colachel, in Kanyakumari district had passed a diploma course in Marine Engineering. He then worked in various shipping companies abroad for two years and later joined the Red Sea Navigation Company on May 21, 2010. That August, while aboard an Egyptian cargo vessel, MV Suez, he was abducted along with 22 other crew, including five other Indians, by Somalian pirates. After more than a year of being held captive, the crew and the vessel was released on Thursday.“Only God knows the distress I suffered during this 10-and-a-half months of my son’s captivity. He has become so thin. I won’t let him go for this work anymore,” said an emotional mother of Viju, Varcishal Mary. “He will reach Thiruvananthapuram by flight at 10.30 pm and should reach Alanji around midnight,” said father John Rose.
