New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mayawati in a disproportionate assets case.
The notice is in response to a case filed by the Income Tax department.
The IT department is appealing against the Income Tax Tribunal's decision not to tax gifts that Mayawati received from BSP supporters during her 2004 birthday celebrations.
The cost of the gifts runs into lakhs of rupees. Mayawati got gifts in cash totalling Rs 12 lakh and property worth Rs 62 lakh from party supporters.
The next date of hearing in the case is September 19.
However, Mayawati has denied that any notice was sent to her by the Delhi High Court in a disproportionate assets case. She claims that a case doesn't even exist in the court.
Last year, after two years of investigation, the Central Bureau of Investigation found a long list of disproportionate assets — Rs 8.77 crore and Rs 7.36 crore of unaccounted money — along with several crores of investment in the stock market of the BSP supremo.
Since the early 90s till 2003, Mayawati had only declared assets worth Rs 1.11 crore in her income tax returns.
