HC orders Ramadoss: Sign all 700 AIIMS degrees now
Only 49 of the 700 resident doctors at AIIMS have got their degrees.

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Monday ordered AIIMS President and Union Health Minister Ambumani Ramadoss to sign all the resident’ doctor’s degrees within 24-hours.

Reportedly only 49 of the 700 resident doctors got their degrees till Monday afternoon.

The Union Health Minister had assured the resident doctors on Thursday that by September 25, all the degrees will be handed out at the convocation.

He had said, “those who are in a hurry to apply abroad for education can come to me and their degrees will be signed within 1-2 days. While the rest of the degrees will be handed over by next month.”

The resident doctors were seeking legal advice on whether the degrees could be held as valid without Ramadoss’ signatures.

The Resident Doctors Association of AIIMS had said that 700 doctors may have to forego their careers since their degrees have not been signed yet.

They also said that the standoff was a result of an ego tussle between AIIMS Director Dr Venugopal and Health Minister Ambumani Ramadoss.

Although Venugopal insisted that these will be handed out on September 25, the doctors said that it will be too late and will result in a loss of an entire academic year for those seeking a career abroad.

The MBBS doctors needed degrees before September 1 in order to seek admission this academic year in institutions abroad.
