HC suspends order on MLCs election

State Legislative Council chairman A Chakrapani on Monday deferred the swearing-in of Congress candidate L Venkatrami Reddy as an MLC following the High Court’s decision to keep its earlier order suspended for four weeks.

Justice R Kantha Rao had on Friday set aside the election of TDP’s A Narsa Reddy and declared Venkatrami Reddy as elected by a margin of nine votes from the Local Authority Constituency in Nizamabad district in the election held on March 30, 2009. On Monday Narsa Reddy challenged the order and the judge had granted interim suspension of his order for four weeks to facilitate the former to approach the Supreme Court.

Venkatrami Reddy, carrying a copy of the single judge order, went to the Council chairman’s office on Monday to take the oath. But TDP leaders Mandava Venkateswara Rao, R Prakash Reddy and R Chandrasekhar Reddy raised objection, saying the court gave Narsa Reddy four weeks’ time to approach the apex court.

Chairman’s office insisted on original order of the court to take their request into consideration. When TDP leaders produced it, the chairman adjourned the ceremony.

After receiving copies of the order from both candidates, the chairman declared that he would administer the oath of office to Venkatrami Reddy after court cleared the case in his favour.
