The family of 24-year-old Ashwini Koshta, who was mowed down by a drunk teen driving a speeding Porsche on the streets of Pune, were in shock as her body was brought to her home in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur.
Ashwini was one of the two persons hit fatally by the reckless vehicle at 2.15 am on Sunday.
The Juvenile Justice Board’s decision to grant the youngster bail on the same day while asking him to write an essay on road accidents and help traffic police has drawn criticism. Ashwini’s family said they were dismayed by the bail conditions and were ready to fight at every level to get her justice.
“We are in shock,” said her uncle Sachin Bokde. “It is condemnable that he should get bail in 15 hours. He and his parents should be investigated. We will discuss the matter once Ashwini’s last rites are over tomorrow,” he added. Asked if there was a possibility of political pressure in the case, he said it was “quite possible and elections are on anyway”.
“We want his bail cancelled and he should remain in police custody. Because of him, an innocent girl, who has seen nothing of life, died,” said her uncle Sachin Bokde.
Ashwini’s father, Suresh Kumar Koshta, works as an office assistant in the state’s electricity department. One of his sons, Samprit Koshta, is a software engineer in Bengaluru.
A software engineer, Ashwini had been living in Pune for the last two years. She was working with Amazon when she first moved to Pune. A year ago, she switched jobs and joined the Johnson Controls Company.
Meanwhile, Satish Awadhiya, uncle of the second victim, Aneesh Awadhiya, said, “The way things are going, I do not see we are getting any justice.”
“For using rules in his favour, he is a minor but when he is driving that car given by his parents, he is not a minor,” he said.
He added that there were a few eyewitnesses, who said the car’s speed at the time of the accident was 230 km/hour and he was completely drunk.
