Heavy rains leave 28 dead in UP
In the last couple of days, water level in major rivers was rising at a number of places.

Lucknow: Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in eastern Uttar Pradesh leaving 28 people dead while water level was rising in major rivers.

While 18 people were killed in incidents of wall and house collapse in Jaupur district, 10 deaths were reported from Mirzapur district which received 120 mm and 150 mm respectively since Saturday, officials said on Sunday.

In Jaunpur district, while six persons were killed in Gaurabadshahpur, five deaths each were reported from Sadar and Madiyahon and one each from Badlapur and Machlishahar, Additional District Magistrate Pramod Kumar Upadhyaya said.

In Mizrapur district four persons died in wall collapse in Adalhat, three in Wahijingna, two in Shakteshgarh and one in Chunar, sources said.

According to Central Water Commission, due to heavy rainfall in the last couple of days, water level in major rivers was rising at a number of places.

Ganga was rising at Chatnag, Mirzapur, Varanasi and Ghazipur, whereas Gomti was rising at Sultanpur and Jaunpur.

According to MET department, monsoon has been vigorous in eastern UP while light to moderate rain and thunder showers occurred in western parts.

The rainfall recorded in Varanasi was 300 mm, Robertgunj 280 mm, Chunar-230 mm, Chopan and Churk 220 mm each, Chandauli 150 mm, Handia and Gharaul 100 mm.

Moderate to rather heavy rains would occur at most places over eastern UP and light to moderate rains and thundershower were expected at a few places western parts, the department said.
