KOCHI: The Kerala High Court on Monday directed the state government to ensure that safety measures were followed for the transportation of ammonia using trucks between 8 pm to 8 am.The court further directed the authorities to take immediate steps for arranging transport via water using insulated vessels.A Division Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice C N Ramachandran Nair and Justice P S Gopinathan passed the order while considering a petition filed by Vijayan, former member of Thiruvankulam Panchayat against the transportation of ammonia from FACT, Udyogamandal to Kochi units during day time. The petitioner submitted that the transportation of liquefied ammonia using trucks is a violation of Rule 356(7) of the Kerala Motor Vehicle Rules 1989. The court directed the authorities to check tankers on regular intervals and to ensure that there was no leakage or damage.“The qualification and experience of the crew, especially of the driver should be ensured. Ammonia tankers are passing through thickly populated areas. Risk of accident is there even during the night. The impact of accident may be less during night time,” the court said.
