Mumbai: Apparently taking on activists who frequently allege corruption at government level, Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma on Saturday said tendency of "hit-and-run" cannot be allowed as decision making has slowed down hurting the economy.
"We cannot allow any situation developing where you have a hit-and-run situation; where anybody getting up questioning the system, assaulting and subverting Indian democracy or reputations ...," Sharma said. He was responding to HDFC Chairman Deepak Parekh's query at Economic Times Award function in Mumbai on how the government would instill confidence again in the Indian bureaucracy which comes to a stand still the moment scams comes to light.
His comments come in the backdrop of India Against Corruption activists Arvind Kejriwal and Prashant Bhushan targetting political and business leaders charging them with corruption and stashing away money abroad.
Stressing that the country has been facing difficult times, Sharma said, "the decision making has been slowed down. It has hurt the country, its economy, job creation, therefore it is the time that everybody realises that Indian story must not be questioned..."
He further said India is a rule-based country and there are due processes which would take care of any default and wrong doing. So, "lets continue with our work, decision making, reassure the system that people who are working in the interest of India shall get that protection," the Minister said adding India can ill-afford an atmosphere of suspicion and distrust.
