New Delhi: It's a fever which refuses to go and just keeps growing. The rise of Yo Yo Honey Singh in the past two years has just been phenomenal. The singer rapper has become almost an essential part of all the Bollywood films and makers are ready to spend hefty amount to get the singer on board.
Films may not work but if that film has a song by Yo Yo Honey Singh, the film's soundtrack is bound to be superhit. Take for instance T-Series last film 'Yaariyaan' which starred a bunch of new comers in a college romance. While the film did not work at all, its music- which had two of Honey Singh numbers is still ruling the charts.
Born as Hirdesh Singh in Delhi and trained in the prestigious Trinity College of Music ( AR Rahman is also an alumni of the same college) Honey Singh has been producing music since 2005. But it is only in 2011, when he collaborated with Daljit Dosanjh for a song called 'Lak 28 Kudi' that put him the limelight. Saif Ali Khan's 'Cocktail' had one of his songs- 'Angreji Beat' which put him the top league. Reportedly he was paid Rs 7 crores for the song. While the song made him an household name overnight, it was his past work that pulled him into one controversy after the other.
Post the 2012 Delhi Gang rape case, Honey Singh's past work was publicly criticized as some of them used offensive language and some even depicted violence against women and 'glorified' rape. An FIR was even launched against the rapper for writing offensive lyrics which Honey Singh denied writing. People who collaborated with him including director Anurag Kashyap and Akshay Kumar were also criticized.
Interestingly, in our country hero worship and criticism for a person almost goes hand in hand. The people who were up in arms criticizing the singer for offensive songs suddenly started enjoying the music the moment he got a clean chit on all the cases from Punjab and Haryana High court. Of course collaborating with country's biggest star Shah Rukh Khan to pay a tribute to another superstar Rajinikanth also helped in smoothening the creases that were left. 'Lungi Dance' by Honey Singh almost became an anthem of 2013 and filmmakers soon started queuing up outside Honey Singh's office to sign him up for their films.
From SRK to Akshay Kumar to Ranbir Kapoor to even Gulzar- all seem to be more than keen to work with the Punjabi rapper. But will this last long? As someone the other day stated "Honey Singh is the new Himesh Reshamiya of Bollywood. Just like Himesh, Honey Singh's popularity is also momentary. This too shall pass."
Whether he disappears into oblivion in few years from now is something to be seen later but till then sit back, frown upon and still hum his songs.
