Nilgiris is therefore not only known for its vegetable cultivation, but also for its ornamental flower cultivation.

Flowers are used nowadays in various auspicious occasions, wedding functions and birthday parties for decoration. Carnation flowers play a vital role in such decorations. These flowers are strikingly beautiful. Although there are many types of flowers that are required for decorations, carnation flowers are the most common ones. Carnation flowers, that is Dianthus Caryophyllus, is a type of flowering plant in a strain of Dianthus. These flowers have been cultivated for more than two thousand years, but its origin is not known. It is believed that the species Dianthus is a native to the Mediterranean region. They play an important role in decorations because of the mesmerising appearance and eye-catching colour. The Nilgiris district is knowingly selected for its significance in carnation flower cultivation within Tamil Nadu. Nilgiris is therefore not only known for its vegetable cultivation, but also for its ornamental flower cultivation. In each of the areas of Kotagiri, Coonoor and Uthagai, two villages were picked, making a total number of six villages, for its cultivation. Thirty farmers are chosen to grow carnations in order to get a good sample, with five farmers from each village.

These farmers are also interviewed using a set of questionnaires. The study also looked at the financial factors like benefit-cost ratio, net present worth, internal rate of return, to see if growing carnations in the Nilgiris is economically beneficial or not. For the cultivation of carnation flowers, the land is first prepared by applying cow dung. After that, the seeds are planted. Carnation seedlings are produced from Poona. After the preparation of the land, these seedlings are planted and maintained.

It has also contributed to the success of rise n’ shine, a prominent carnation flower plant exporter based in Pune. This plant takes six months to grow and bloom and it blooms in different colours depending on the nature of the plant. These plants continue to flower for six months. The cultivation of carnation flowers is also funded by the horticulture department. Farmers reported that they get good amounts after cultivation during Muhurtham (auspicious times of the day), while normal prices at other times.

Horticulture has a higher labour force than vegetable cultivation. This also increases the cost. One of the farmers named Bheema said that currently they are cultivating carnation flowers in seven colours. Sales are best during any auspicious time of the day, while the cultivation of these flowers also requires a bit more investment. Income can be earned accordingly.

He also added that because they are located in the Nilgiris, they also get a benefit from the region’s natural rainfall, which is beneficial for their cultivation. It becomes competitive only when flowers are imported from outside in the region which might reduce their sale. The products grown in Nilgiris are regarded as highly valuable, suggesting that they have good market demand and prices.
