HYDERABAD: Heavy rain lashed many parts of the city on Saturday, throwing normal life out of gear and inundating many low-lying localities. Traffic came to a standstill in Lakdi-ka-pul, Khairatabad, Raj Bhavan road, Punjagutta, Begumpet, Secunderabad, Ameerpet, Model House and Tolichowki with rainwater overflowing on the streets. Heavy rain started from around 1.30 p.m and continued till late evening in many parts in the city. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation emergency wing received more than 50 complaints of water logging, rain water overflowing on streets with major complaints reported from places like Raj Bhavan road, Begumpet and Filmnagar. The CPDCL helpline was also inundated with calls with residents complaining of power cuts. In most cases, trees falling on wires was the cause of unscheduled power cuts. “Traffic came to standstill for a couple of hours in many places after heavy rain lashed the city. Traffic police and GHMC officials have taken up immediate measures in clearing traffic and rain water from the streets. The situation was brought under our control by 7.30 p.m,” said GVG Ashok Kumar, deputy commissioner of police (traffic). Meanwhile, GHMC’s emergency cell has received more than 50 complaints against the waterlogged and overflowing streets. They also received complaints over the partial damage of three auto-rickshaws due to collapse of a compound wall at Jubilee Hills. Two trees that were uprooted at Villa Marie college and Yashoda Hospital in Somajiguda caused traffic snarls on the stretch from Raj Bhavan to Begumpet. According to meteorological department, the city received 5 cms rainfall, the season’s highest so far. Drains overflowed in most parts of the city while the Hussainsagar lake received huge inflows. Houses located in low-lying areas at Nadim Colony near Tolichowki were inundated due to the rainwater. GHMC officials evacuated and shifted stranded families from the place to a nearby community hall.
