The MiG-27 fighter crashed about two kms from the runway in Jodhpur.

A MiG-27 fighter jet of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed in a residential area in Rajasthan's Jodhpur on Monday morning. The fighter crashed about five kms from the Jodhpur IAF base.

While the pilot ejected safely, a house was damaged in the crash. The IAF has ordered a court on inquiry into the crash.

The pilot was on a routine training mission. He had reported a technical problem and sought priority landing. However, as the engine had failed, he had to eject, IAF sources said.

The plane crashed adjacent to a house in an open area inMahaveer Nagar, SHO Basni Police Station Rajesh Yadav said. According to ACP Jodhpur (West) Sima Hingonia a portion of a house where the plane crashed was damaged.

Mig-27s are altready on their way out with the IAF slowly phasing out the fighters still in service. The aging jets were bought from Russia in the 1960s and 70s.

They have undergone several upgradations during their tenure with the IAF.

The IAF currently operates 35 squadron even though the sanctioned strength is 42. The sanctioned strength for a possible two way fight - Pakistan and China combined - is 45.
