Mumbai: Bollywood scriptwriter Salim Khan on Sunday slammed his son and actor Salman Khan over his tweets in support of 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict Yakub Memon.
Salim said, "Whatever Salman has written is ridiculous and meaningless. Salman is ignorant of the issue and people should not take him seriously."
Salim also advocated that Yakub should not be hanged and said, "Yakub should be kept in jail rather be hanged. Keeping him alive is a bigger punishment."
Salman had tweeted that Yakub's brother Tiger should be hanged instead. Salman tweeted, "Hang Tiger. Brother is being hanged for Tiger. Arre where is Tiger? Get Tiger hang him. Parade him not his brother."
Security has also been beefed outside Salman's residence after Shiv Sena threatened to hold protest.
Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam urged Salman to withdraw his tweets, "In 1993 when celebrities were arrested, Bollywood came out and supported them saying "you're innocent". I warned them back then saying not to interfere with judicial process. I hope that Salman does not do the same. He should understand the agony of people."
The Supreme Court had dismissed Yakub's curative petition against death sentence and he will now be hanged on July 30. The curative petition was the last legal recourse available for Memon.
According to investigating agency, Tiger got Yakub involved in planning and plotting the serial blasts that killed at least 257 people and injured about 700 on March 12, 1993.
The superstar even called Yakub an innocent man and tweeted, "One innocent man killed is killing the humanity."
Khan even appealed to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to give details about Tiger's whereabouts if he is in the neighbouring country.
