Heavy rains in both the states since the past few days have caused landslides, waterlogging of roads and disruption in vehicular traffic

Heavy rains continued to lash several parts of Kerala on Thursday disrupting the normal life. On other hand, Karnataka has also been witnessing heavy rains in the coastal districts for the last few days. On Thursday, a landslide occurred in a ghat section of Goa following incessant rains, disrupting vehicular traffic movement from the state to neighbouring Karnataka.

Red Alert in Three Districts of Kerala

Widespread heavy rains in the hilly areas of Wayanad district has partially damaged 29 houses with over 700 people being shifted to 22 camps and a rise in water levels of rivers flowing through the region.

Incidents of flooding, uprooting of trees, property damage and minor landslides were reported from many parts of the northern Kerala districts of Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod where the IMD issued a red alert for the day.

The district administration in all three districts declared a holiday for educational institutions on Friday, July 19.

In Palakkad, a school bus overturned into a canal, but no one was injured and the children were rescued.

In Kozhikode, visuals showed school children travelling in a jeep to school with the vehicle partially submerged in the waterlogged road.

In Kannur, the heavy rains necessitated the shifting of 80 people to camps and around 71 families were moved to homes of their relatives in Kannur, the district administration said.

Additionally, 13 houses have been completely damaged and 242 homes partially damaged in the district due to the monsoon rains. Reports of property damage due to the rains also came from Thrissur and Ernakulam districts.

Apart from the red alert in the three northernmost districts of Kerala, the IMD also issued an orange alert in seven other districts of the state for the day.

Floods Ravage Karnataka, Red Alert Still in Place

With the rains not letting up, and with the monsoon still vigorous, the India Meteorological Department has extended the red alert for coastal Karnataka till July 18.

Several incidents of flooding, uprooting of trees and minor landslides have also been reported from many parts of northern Kerala districts. Uttara Kannada district, in particular, witnessed heavy to very heavy showers in the last 24 hours.

Since the intensity of rain has reduced in south interior Karnataka, the weather department has retracted the red alert for the region and has issued an orange one till July 20.

The landslide occurred near Dudhsagar Temple at Anmod Ghat, located on the southern boundary of Goa, leading to Karnataka, a police official said. Traffic movement from the ghat section to areas like Belgaum and Khanapur in Karnataka was also disrupted.
