Bagalkot, a district in Karnataka, is currently capturing the headlines due to the rare case of a baby boy named Bharti in the Rabkavi Banhatti town. He was born with 25 fingers. According to the Local 18 Kannada, this baby has been born at Sunshine Hospital, a multispeciality hospital. Doctors were surprised to find the baby boy with 12 toes (6 toes on both feet) and 13 (6 on the right and 7 on the left hand) fingers. The newborn’s family members are happy, with the little bundle of joy’s arrival in their lives. More details about the baby boy and his family are not available in the public domain. Polydactyly is a condition in which a baby is born with one or more extra fingers. In many cases, polydactyly happens spontaneously without a genetic cause.
Gurappa, the baby boy’s father, talked more about this incident in an interview with a newspaper. According to him, his wife used to visit the Sri Bhuvaneshwari Devi Shakti Peetam Suragiri Hills temple in Kundaragi, Karnataka. At the temple, his wife used to pray to the goddess for children. Gurappa is happy that the goddess accepted his prayers and blessed his family with a child.
Obstetrician and gynaecologist at Sunshine Hospital, Dr Parvati Hiremath, said that this child is a rare case due to an imbalance of chromosomes. According to the doctor, both the baby boy and the child are healthy as of now.
A similar case happened in 2023. According to reports, a baby girl was born with a total of 26 fingers and toes in the Deeg district of Rajasthan. The doctors at a health centre had confirmed this. The newborn girl had seven fingers on each hand and six toes on both feet. The doctors said that the extra fingers and toes were due to a rare condition caused by a genetic disorder. The girl’s family members believe that she is an incarnation of a goddess they worship.
The newborn’s maternal uncle, Deepak said in an interview, “She has come to our home as a goddess. We all are lucky that Lakshmi has taken birth in our family”.
