A unique school in Shivamogga, Karnataka, is making headlines of late. This school is aiming to raise children artistically. It is unique for its open school concept and its emphasis on folk art. This new kind of idea is the brainchild of a man named Navina Tejaswi, an engineer from Soraba, who has opened this Bhima school. According to reports, such an innovative school has been opened in Hosabale village in the Sorab taluka of Shimoga district. This school is called Bhima Shala; it is an open school, not within four walls. Here, children can stay in the open atmosphere and acquire unique knowledge, especially that of rural art along with modern one.

Reports suggest every month many training sessions are given to the children of this school. The main ones are self-training, film screening, painting, filmmaking, and learning English. Already 25 children between the ages of 10 and 15 have received training. Out of these 25 children, 8 are girls.

All these children come to Bhima School during holidays and free time. Here they get additional knowledge by watching movies, reading books, and training themselves. Through this, they get a new kind of education that is not available in a regular school.

In the school there is also a screening of famous films from different genres every weekend. There is no doubt that Bhima School, which is playing a great role in making children multi-faceted by taking interest in artistic subjects and not just education, will be the pioneer of rural revolution in the near future.

The term “open schooling” refers to learning that is flexible in terms of schedule, teaching roles, location, ways of access, instructional methods, and other aspects of the learning process. In an ever-evolving embodiment of modern communication technologies, the open school system in India takes a flexible approach to curriculum selection, pace, and study location. The distance mode allows this educational system to be open and adaptable, which is the system’s most essential feature. This system allows students to study at home, at work, or anywhere else that is convenient for them without having to attend regular classes.
