Do you know there is a mango which is also known as Mango ice cream? In the Sirsi region of Karnataka, a unique variety of mango ice cream is available, which is called Varate Giduga also known as mango ice cream. This mango ice cream tastes more delicious during the rainy season.

This unique mango ripens by mid-April and has a deep orange firm pulp and is very sweet with a pleasant flavour. It is smooth and has a custard-like consistency, making it a favourite among the locals and mango lovers.

Its popularity lies in its limited availability making it an exclusive treat. The speciality of this variety of mango is that it can be preserved for 15 days. Each fruit weighs a quarter kg.

It is also reported that this breed was developed 50 years ago in the Amchemane area. It originated when Eshanna Hegada’s father from Amchemane planted the Kari Eshadu variety of mango. The mango is named Varate Giduga because its tastes beat that of the Ishadi variety and its shape is similar to a sitting hawk bird. This distinct mango variety is cherished for its exceptional flavour and extraordinary appearance.

Amchemane Eshanna Hegade from Hulekal in Sirsi is a well-known transplant specialist who preserved the Varate Giduga mango for 40 years. In his 60s now, he received numerous awards for his crucial contributions to conserving mango varieties. His long-term commitment has played an essential role in maintaining and promoting this unique mango breed.

To enjoy the Varate Giduga mango-like ice cream, cut it into two halves and use a spoon to scoop out the creamy pulp. This unique mango variety is a treat which is worth experiencing.
