In Tamil Nadu's Tirunelveli, Retired Boxing Coach Gives Free Training To Youngsters

Retired Sports Authority of India (SAI) Boxing Chief Coach Shiv Kumar Pal has stirred the headlines for providing free boxing training to students at VOC stadium in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. As per Local18 Tamil, he has been giving this training for a few years and has trained many boys to become excellent boxers.

These sportsmen have won many tournaments at the state and national levels and bagged medals as well under Shiv Kumar’s mentorship. The boxing coach hails from a family of farmers in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Despite completing his work tenure, he leaves no stone unturned to train the students in the field of boxing out of passion for the sport.

He said, “I have worked as a head trainer in the World Boxing Association. I have worked as a head boxing coach for both men and women for about 25 years.” He was initially trained as a wrestler but then shifted his preferences to boxing in 1975. He won many medals at the state and national level. He started working as a lawyer to earn his livelihood but then left it to concentrate full-time on boxing.

The central government then appointed Shiv Kumar as the boxing coach. According to him, he came to Tirunelveli due to the job change and went on to provide training to them for 3 years. He then gave the example of one of his brightest students named Abdul Niwas, the present owner of Diamond House Hotel. Shiv Kumar said that he is now providing training to Abdul’s son.

Besides boxing, Shiv Kumar’s sportsmanship skills extend beyond volleyball as well and he has worked in all parts of India. According to him, his students are currently appointed in prominent positions in all the states in India in various departments like the Indian army, navy, air force, police, etc. According to Shiv Kumar, when he was the head coach of the Indian women’s boxing team, he produced many achievers. This includes the world record holders like Mary Kom. In 2008, he got an opportunity to work again in Tirunelveli.
