In Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli, Surge In Demand For DJs At Weddings
Instead of traditional or folk music, people are more inclined to opt for DJs.

Weddings have become a great source of income for many. A wedding means business for caterers, flowers, decor, hotels, mehendi artists, jewellery and bridal shops, DJs and other musicians. Gone are the days when a city had just a handful of wedding halls or party plots for large-scale weddings. Earlier, in South India, weddings used to be simple and often took place in temples or even at homes. It has undergone many changes in the last decade. One of the most significant changes is the drastic switch from traditional music to DJs. Nowadays, weddings have become extravagant. The pre-wedding rituals begin with separate days for mehendi, sangeet, wedding and finally the reception. Right from sangeet, instead of traditional or folk music, people are more inclined to opt for DJs and dance their hearts out to catchy tunes. Nadaswaram, a traditional South Indian instrument, has been replaced by upbeat and high-tempo party songs.

If you think that DJs are a common phenomenon in the metro cities only, then you can’t be more wrong. The surge in demand for DJs has been witnessed even in second-tier cities or towns. In Tirunelveli, baarats travel from far away places to attend the wedding of family members and bond over their dance sessions to DJ. What may have captured the hearts of the people is that the DJs are mixing the latest film songs, adding colourful lights and groovy beats. You can also offer them suggestions and they will play your song. Probably, due to this, there has been a rise of DJs everywhere.

Apart from music, even wedding invites and photography have witnessed a major shift. While physical copies of an invite are still a thing, people are also resorting to making GIFS or sending e-invites. Apart from this, now, there’s a concept of pre-wedding shoots, hiring a cinematographer for all the rituals and even taking drone shots to showcase the venue or decor. Instead of cash, even the smallest of the vendors are accepting digital transactions.
