New Delhi: In what could be tantamount to declaring its open allegiance to the US, India on Wednesday imposed a ban on the export of any material and technology to Iran that could be used in the development of nuclear weapons.
The decision was taken by the Central Government in compliance with the United Nations' Security Council Resolution, 2006.
"Direct or indirect export and import of all items, materials, equipment, goods and technology which could contribute to Iran's enrichment-related, reprocessing or heavy water related activities, or to the development of nuclear weapon delivery systems, whether or not originating in Iran to/from Iran is prohibited," the notification issued by Directorate General of Foreign Trade was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.
The resolution had demanded that Iran should end all uranium enrichment work which can produce nuclear fuel.
However, there would be some exceptions such as equipment meant for light water reactors and low-enriched uranium when it is incorporated in assembled nuclear fuel elements for such reactors.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged Iran to comply with a Security Council call to halt its sensitive nuclear work.
Last year, Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had vowed not to back down and refused to halt sensitive nuclear operations even an 'inch' in the face of intimidation.
Washington had then called for a quick UN response with international sanctions.
