Indian Navy concludes TROPEX Excercise, tests deployment of two Carrier Task Forces

Indian Navy concluded the month-long Theatre Level Readiness and Operational Exercise (TROPEX) Exercise which was spread over Arabian Sea and the Northern Indian Ocean on February 27. It was the largest ever and most sophisticated TROPEX exercise.

For the first time TROPEX Exercise involved two aircraft carriers along with India's maiden dedicated defence satellite Rukmini for the Navy.

More than 50 ships and submarines along with above 70 aircraft of different types from three naval commands participated and validated Indian Navy's concept of operations.

Aircraft Carrier Vikramaditya with MiG 29K fighter jets, nuclear powered submarine INS Chakra, P8I LRMRASW aircraft, guided missile destroyer Kolkata, Anti-Submarine Warfare corvette Kamorta were extensively deployed during TROPEX.

The exercise also saw participation of units from the India Air Force and the Indian Coast Guard.

During TROPEX-2015, for the first time the Navy had deployed two Carrier Task Forces simultaneously at sea, with both Viraat and Vikramaditya operating with their integral flights in an operational scenario. This assumes significance as it makes the Indian Navy, besides the US Navy, capable of deploying more than one Carrier Task Force at sea, at present.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar spent a night on-board Vikramaditya during the naval exercise.
