CHENNAI: A head constable, who suffered head injury after he met with an accident during his routine patrolling at Ice House on Friday, died at the Government General Hospital here on Tuesday. Police said he could have been saved had the government hospital given him timely treatment. Police said head constable Venkatesan from Ice House police station had gone on night patrolling on Friday along with constable Selvaraj on a two-wheeler when his vehicle had a head-on collision with another bike with two persons — Sanjay and Ravi of Ayodhikuppam. Venkatesan suffered head injury and was admitted to Government General Hospital where he was allegedly not treated for the ailment for the first two hours.Later, the duty doctors, who had found that injury was severe, told the head constable’s attenders to take him to a private hospital as it would take time for the doctors to come and treat the head injury; police said.According to Venkatesan’s brother Nagaraj, he was taken to a private hospital at Tondiarpet where they paid ` 30,000 initially. Later, the hospital authorities had asked him to pay an additional `2 lakh claiming that the head constable needed a surgery in his head. Venkatesan’s family had then called Police Commissioner J K Tripathy.“A few senior police officials visited the hospital and told the staff not to get any money from us without informing them,” said Nagaraj. But the family, meanwhile, paid `1 lakh and Venkatesan was operated upon. On Tuesday morning, Venkatesan died in the hospital.
