Inspection of quarries commences

Special teams constituted by Anshul Mishra, District Collector, to inspect the granite quarries for violation of rules, began their work on Thursday.

In the wake of allegations that illegal quarrying was rampant in several places,  including Melur area, in the district, the Collector announced, while taking charge, that a survey would be conducted in all the granite mines in the district.

A report, which was sent to the State Industry Secretary by the then district collector U Sagayam, surfaced in the media recently.

The report stated that there was a loss of `23.42 crore to the exchequer due to illegal mining by three granite companies in Madurai districrt.
