HYDERABAD: Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Wednesday directed the officials to expedite the payment of insurance claims to farmers who lost their crop during kharif last year. The National Agriculture Insurance Corporation (NAIC) is expected to release insurance compensation amounting to `791 crore.Of the Rs 791 crore, about Rs 121 crore will be given to farmers belonging to Srikakulam district followed by Rs 122 crore to East Godavari, `145 crore to West Godavari, Rs 102 crore to Krishna, Rs 128 crore to Anantapur  and Rs 101 crore to Kadapa. The remaining amount would be distributed to other districts depending on the crop loss incurred by the farmers in those districts. Both the state government and the insurance agency will pay 50 per cent compensation each. The chief minister, who reviewed the payment of insurance claims on Wednesday,  asked officials to see the amount is disbursed to farmers in all districts immediately after the funds are released. The officials claimed that settlement of insurance claims takes more than a year due to various procedures involved but the agriculture department officials and local insurance officials were making efforts to get the amount released within eight months.
