New Delhi: In an industry dominated by numbers, Sonakshi Sinha's career graph is mostly dominated by blockbuster films- of which most have made Rs 100 crores. And yet, when the awards are given away, her name never makes the shortlist.
Sonakshi made a splashing debut as the demure potter girl in Salman Khan starrer 'Dabangg' back in 2010. Although the film was an action film with the story completely revolving around Chulbul Pandey (Khan), Sonakshi managed to make heads turn with her performance. But while most try to experiment with a meatier role in their subsequent films post a successful debut, Sonakshi, surprisingly stuck to the treaded path and just appeared in action films which gave her very little scope to show her acting prowess.
After 'Dabangg', Sonakshi followed up with similar roles in 'Rowdy Rathore', 'Son Of Sardar' and 'Dabangg 2'. All had Sonakshi Sinha playing a miniscule role, adding the glamour quotient in the action film and all were part of the elite Rs 100 crore club.
Amid all these masala potboilers, Sonakshi also appeared in Vikramaditya Motwane's 'Lootera'- a sublime story about love, deceit and hope set in the 1950s. Having won laurels for his debut film 'Udaan', expectations were high from his second film 'Lootera'. From casting two commercial actors (Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha) in a sort of art film to taking two years to complete the film- Motwane took the gamble which perhaps paid off. Many were actually skeptical whether Sonakshi, a regular in no brainer masala potboilers, would be able to deliver. But she stunned the critics as well as her fans with a restraint performance in the film, which made people get up and take notice of her talent.
While most actresses, after winning adulation in 'hatke' roles try out something different, Sonakshi went right back to her formula films and played a prop once again in 'Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobara' which though was supposed to be a triangle love story but in reality was just a film showcasing Akshay Kumar's 'cockiness'.
Her contemporaries like Alia Bhatt, Shraddha Kapoor and Anushka Sharma all have at least attempted to step out of their comfort zone. Some have been appreciated; some of the attempts were booed. But Sonakshi has stuck to same genre throughout. Sure she gets to be a part of 100 crore blockbuster with heroes who are double her age, but no one really remembers her in those films for her acting. She may have tasted commercial success but somehow, critical acclaim alludes her most of the time.
So what is the right way forward? Doing formula films year after year and becoming the most successful actress of the current times? Or being remembered years later for roles that has her more to do than provide glamour quotient in a story. It's not like she can't deliver. 'Lootera' is a prime example of the abilities this actress has- so why is she afraid to be a part more such films?
